Johnny Ramirez of Payette, Idaho found inspiration and guidance in learning about automobiles from his father, who built cool cars and trucks. Since then, Johnny’s own vehicles have included a ’70 Mustang Mach 1, ’07 Shelby Mustang and a few pickups.
That love of trucks inspired him to form his own company, Fusion Bumpers, which fabricates high-end custom bumpers popular among diesel truck owners. Over the years, their trucks have appeared at the SEMA Show, and on the cover of Diesel World magazine.
The Dodge Ram 3500 he and his crew planned to modify for the 2013 SEMA Show would have the usual lift kit, bigger tires and wheels and Fusion bumpers, but their goal was to have an emissions-legal compound turbo powered 6.7L Cummins diesel. In their debut as a SEMA Show exhibitor, Ramirez also wanted to ensure it looked as good as it ran.
A Long Bed Conversions stretch conversion by Precision Body Line kicked things off, before BDS Suspension prototyped their Dodge Ram 8” long arm suspension system, with Fox 2.0 remote reservoir shocks and 8” Pro Ride coils in front. BDS Glide-Ride leaf springs out back use another set of Fox shocks, and a Street to Sand differential cover was added. The lift clears the way for 38” 15.50X20 Toyo M/T tires on 20” X 12” BMF AWOL wheels all around.
Providing the power is ATS’ Aurora Plus 7500 compound-turbo system with ATS Dual Fuelers to remain street legal, using all the factory emissions equipment. Over 60 lbs. of boost are produced by the turbos, so a set of ATS head studs provided added insurance. Feeding the Fuelers is a FASS 150-GPH system, and the custom tune by H&S Performance gave the Dodge Ram all-round performance and towing capability. More than 650 HP and 1,200 ft/lbs. of torque were realized, and it’s been CARB certified. With the added power and torque, the next step was installing an ATS Stage 4 transmission, 5-Star converter, Towing Edition valve body, a billet flex plate and input shaft.
To make the exterior equally show worthy, Reno’s Street To Sand Off-Road painted to match the mirrors and door handles and then smoked the headlights. Fusion Bumpers’ new stainless steel bumpers were added to the front and rear and were fitted with Rigid Industries LED Lighting Q-Series LED Lights in front and 4” E-Series LED Lights in back. A Status grille completed the front end.
Retrax’s Pro tonneau cover protects the Cargo Glide CG 200XL pullout, mounted over a Bed Rug. AMP Research Power Boards and a Bed Step ease exit and entry to the cab and bed. Match painted EGR fender flares cover the wide Toyos, and Boise’s Transguard provided the custom graphics. A Viair air tank and compressor feeds the train horns, which are mounted under the truck.
Inside, Reno’s Elite Customs match painted the trim pieces, panels and door trim. Husky Liners protect the floor, and a Clean Sweep interface connects the stock head unit, steering wheel controls, and the JL Audio HD 1000 amps which powers all the JL Audio speakers, including a pair of 10TW3-D4 units in a custom back wall enclosure. As great as Ramirez’s Dodge Ram is, we can’t help but look forward to what he has planned next!
